Magi ch.323  -  Sinbad no Bouken ch.169

I was too busy to talk about this when it was out but:
LISTEN, this parallelism is not like the others? Most of the others imitated Magi panels in their exact compositions, everything in the same place with some changes ofc. However this one, this one is like a response, like a dialogue. And only because Ja’far’s head was drawn in the opposite direction.
Try to picture how it happened. Ohtera-sensei definitely has Magi’s manga with him when he does this parallelisms. He probably was ready to draw Ja’far in the same position as Sinbad, but….chose not to, on purpose. I don’t know the reason ofc, but his decision made both scenes more powerful to me somehow.
They happen in different contexts ofc, but both Sin and Ja are experiencing the same feeling. They know they are gonna die and they are satisfied with their deaths, ….but in the end, none of them died. This is the parallelism ofc. The same feeling in a similar situation, also same conclusion….except Ja’far’s face is heading Sinbad’s way. It’s funny because Ja’far’s death exeprience happened years before Sin’s, but his panel is like a response to Sinbad’s panel.
Maybe Ohtera-sensei just wanted them to look at each other, because he wanted them to match? Or maybe because it looks good composition-wise (?). But maybe he also wanted their deaths to speak to each other? I wish my English was better to explain what I actually mean.
I feel that their connection is much stronger now, somehow.
I know they are in different panels in different mangas/books and stories, but…. I’m sure this is on purpose. I’m almost sure Ohtera-sensei wanted them to indirectly look at each other or maybe he just wanted them to be united.

Conspirancy theories aside, It looks like their spirits are meeting happily in the afterlife. Smiling at each other. And what smiles they carry…especially Ja’far’s ♥.
Anyway, it’s beautiful. Thank you for so much Ohtera-sensei.

It amazes me the 3 of them were happy about dying there. I mean, sure Ja’far survived but he was ready to die there with a smile on his face. He even said goodbye to Sin in his mind.
All of them were satisfied about those few years of happiness they had after leaving the organization that they didn’t hesitate to die to protect the dream that made their lives better.
It both breaks my heart and also makes me happy for them.
They all deserved better of course, but having a life that makes you feel proud, fullfilled and complete, even tho it was only for a few years, it’s such a difficult thing to achieve, especially when one has a regrettable past.
I kind of understand why someone (or they) would be happy about dying this way.

I find it interesting that when Sinbad is having an inner turmoil, whether or not to save his people or keep his relations with Barbarossa, the inner voice takes shape of Jafar. It also seems like Jafar was driving guilt into Sinbad saying “-with your dirty hands. You and I are both guilty. Your hands are already soiled.”

It’s like Sinbad views Jafar as his voice of reason, so he’ll listen to the words if they are from Jafar assuming Jafar is always credible and has helped Sinbad with his company.

I wonder if Sinbad feels some sort of guilt when it comes to Jafar. Some sort of fear. Maybe that he owes Jafar or something. I can’t get over “You and I are both guilty” and what it means to Sinbad.

This panel kills me. Sinbad has just said to Sharrkan that he should return to his sick mother. He feels sorry he wasn’t able to do the same for his own mother. As you can see his sad expression is full of regret and perhaps guilt, too.

The last time he spoke with his mother before the Baal dungeon adventure she told him not to worry about her and her worsening condition anymore. She even gave him his father’s sword and she encouraged him to follow his dreams:

image

Sinbad, as we all know, accomplished the mission to conquer the Baal dungeon. But that came at the expanse of spending time with his really sick mother. In the end, he arrived at his village just in time to witness his mother’s final moment:

image

Knowing how much Sinbad values family, it’s no wonder that he urges Sharrkan to go and visit his sick mother. Sinbad loves all of his generals and he doesn’t want one of his friends to later regret not spending enough time with a loved one, like he did in the past.

Sinbad and Ja’far reading Seren’s goodbye letter together. Literally holding each side of the paper and reading it together.
I like that this was stricly necessary, somehow. It could have been Sinbad alone reading it to the group, but no, it’s the two of them ♥
Just wanted to point it out…

Why Ja’far never was disowned by Rurumu.
protectjafar

Okay so like…I’m not sure why parts of this fandom find it so hard to believe that Ja’far was and remains to this day Rurumu’s adoptive child when it’s so obviously laid out in canon, but I’ve scene in a few places now comments that by the time the slave arc rolls around Ja’far’s relationship with Rurumu is “Strictly professional” and bears no resemblance to that of familial bonds or even a teacher/student dynamic, so here we are. I’m not sure what these comments even mean to say exactly either like are they insinuating that he was actually disowned or do they just think that he was never actually adopted?

Since I already covered the latter of those two here, I’m going to just assume that these comments where indicating that they somehow drifted apart and that Ja’far is no longer a part of Rurumu and HInahoho’s family. I find this all a bit ridiculous since we got the most interactions between Rurumu and Ja’far in this particular arc, but oh well let’s get into the analysis.

I’m just so happy that they share so many panels and react together a lot and even tho the age and height difference look big at this time of their lives, they still look like a married couple. LOOK how proud they are of Myspipi. I mean, yes, Mystras and Pipirika are older than Ja’far and have Sin’s same age, but they still are the leaders of the company and the family. They look like a proud mom and dad *sobs*.

image

And this: “shhh babe, later pls.” They aren’t even talking, they look at each other and that’s all. So married. Also Sin should have told him earlier so they discussed it first, I’m happy Ja’far protests, he has to tell him stuff like this, it’s important. Even Barbarossa agrees.

image

Look at Ja’far expression and Sin’s nervousness. By the looks of it he hid it on purpose but also was ok with Ja’far finding out later, but forgot it could happen during the party, oh silly Sin. Now his naggy wife will lecture him. Actually he probably didn’t because after their visit to future Sindria, Sin looks ill and Ja’far tells him to rest and then he goes to the land alone and we know what happens next.

Oh it was so fun while it lasted.
Sinja in a fancy party, sinja visiting future Sindria for the first time, Ja’far protecting Sin from Seren and sending him to bed, both of them wandering alone while thinking about each other’s reactions and then *sigh*
Oh well, I hope we get stuff like this before the tragedy too.

Snb after the tragedy

I’m very very excited about SnB’s manga after the tragedy!!!
And I’m also very excited about the timeskip! Mostly cause I want to see 14 year old Ja’baby with new clothes ♥.

Yes it pains me that we’ll lose a lot of characters, my favorites being Rurumu (my fave female Magi character), Mystras, Mahad and Vittel. I’m certainly not ready to see Sin fall into depravity and be possessed by David, however things will start form 0 after that.

Sin is currently 18 so if another year passes my theory of Sindria being destroyed when he was 19 will become true. BUT there’s another event that happens around that year: Magnostadt’s revolution. So it’s very possible that Musta’sim’s arc is introduced before the tragedy.

Since Sinbad absorbs the Rukh from all the fallen people, he will become unable to djinn equip for a while or maybe the effect will be something different than what happened to Alibaba? Anyway, he will lose power and therefore it’s very likely that Barbarossa dies during the tragedy, since after it Sin will be unable to fight anyone. Also it would be impossible for him to form an alliance with Musta’sim having lost all his goods and territory, so maybe it will be intorduced during this arc and after the revolution Mogamett won’t agree to be involved with Sin since he’s a “goi”, but Yamu will take advantage of his presence and run away with him.

The company and the country will be gone so Sinbad will have to start form zero and return to Balbadd where Rashid will give him a place to start again and his new sword. Also who knows maybe Baal’s sword (which is Badr’s sword btw… yeah, ouch) breaks during the battle and therfore that one becomes his new sword.
At some point he’s gonna travel and meet the Yambala to train with them and learn about magoi manipulation and fix his rukh problem.

And after that he’ll have to start actually recovering and conquer the other missing dungeons and most importantly create Sindria!

YES, maybe Sinbad will create Sindria! That’s my new (actually very old) theory. Sindria is a very small island with a very convenient form and location. It’s in the middle of the sea and close to countries like Balbadd, which allows them to have access to faraway parts from the sea and also makes trading easier. It’s also protected by a natural wall made of hard rock, which makes it difficult to access unless someone approachs it from the sky.
It’s impossible that Sinbad finds such a convenient land, or at least I don’t think he will, so maybe he will creat it using the power of one of his new djinns, just like Kouen created a volcano with the power of Agares.
However I also find unlikely that he could naturally create plants and animals that live there, so maybe he actually finds it or who knows, maybe the magic he uses is creation magic and he’s able to create all of them OR maybe they start migrating/growing in Sindria as time passes!

I was very disappointed that Sinbad bought land from Barbarossa, but after I learnt that land wasn’t Magi’s Sindria, I got happy because I was hoping Sindria was created/founded during some kind of interesting adventure and now that’s possible!

The recovery of Sinbad and Sindria is gonna be so fun and interesting, I hope the pain of the tragedy doesn’t overshadow the future adventures. We will finally see the time in which Sin becomes a little more cautious to protect his friends and land better. Also the moment Spartos, Pisti and Yamu join ♥. At the same time we may see the first times David talks in his head which we’ll be painful but interesting nonetheless.

Anyway, things will finally start for real and I hope that whatever we see is as interesting as I imagine it will be.

Hi, Mari! Thanks for always posting good info about Magi! I recently read your post about japanese fans and I'm still curious about specific opinions they might have, if that's ok with you. It's not always we have such international disasters in fandom, so I wanted to know they words and obviously your opnions on the final arc as well. Do you think Magi can recover from it?
image

Hi ♥, I’m happy you enjoy what I share ♥♥♥♥
Haha you should have seen them when Sin died, I guess they freaked out a lot more when that happened, ofc they were sadder than this time.

The amount of salt is too big this time and I’ve never seen people wanting to mute words on twitter for their own safety.

First of all I’m not a fan of this chapter either so aside ele’s summary (I read it because she assured me that it was not gonna upset me) I don’t know anything about this chapter. People ponder a lot about if they got married or not. I’m not sure either and Idk if it’s confirmed, tbh I don’t wanna know either, at least not for now.

A lot of the tweets I read just went:

“poor Seren/Seren-chan doesn’t deserve this/I wanted Seren-chan to be happy”

People are mad because their relaitonship is portrayed like something sweet between them when it’s written like a curse for both characters. (I’ll elaborate more about this below)

“When love does not have sweet and gentle elements, it’s just dust …. I thought that the reason for Sin not getting married was Seren, but I did not think that it was such a heartless reason. It’s not cute at all,“I take responsibility that you took away your life” … It’s not marriage out of love, but atonement“ (all of them are google translate, beware of bad English)

“Although it’s too much impact on the picture surface, so much content is not coming in, I wonder if there is Seren black Rukh inside Sin now.”

I love these ones because this is exactly what bothers me too. The portrayal of their relationship in Magi, picture-wise, contradicts the true nature of it. So much Seren dearly in his memories, and now the hand-holding at Zepar (even tho this is Zepar doing it), all sweet and close and intimate, yet Seren left the company in this week’s chapter, they were never friends and didn’t even bond deeply,
So instead of emphazising all the other relationships she’s created around Sin, Ohtaka suddenly decides to focus on this one and sugarcoat it when it’s one hell of a toxic relationship. Ofc we still dunno how it will end but at this point if it’s a “good” end, I won’t be able buy it anymore.

Then pretty much everything is people unable to empathize:

“If such sweet heroine would have been introduced a lot earlier, I’m sure I’d have fallen for her, but this is the last arc and this makes no sense and I already prefer other characters’ connections to Sin.”

“I always knew there was a dear person for Sin in the past and was prepared for it, …but not like this, I cannot accept this.” (These two tweets are written from memory tho, I lost them on my TL)

This is another weak point about Ohtaka’s writing. I think that talking about Sindria’s tragedy during first Sindria arc was cool but instead of slowly revealing info she just suddenly makes her picture appear with no explanations (Mystras’s and Ruru’s at least had more mentions). Yeah I know pretty much everyone reads SnB by now, but Magi is a different story and such an important character deserves a well-written introduction, not an assumption that everyone already knows her.

And well these were some of my fave tweets, I also faved a lot of salty tweets from angry people, I don’t think I should share cause it’s hate and a lot of swearing (one tweet just literally says: shit shit shit shit).

As for my opinion, I couldn’t agree more with the japanese fandom. (long rantish opinion incomming:)
